Mission
Because of what I do for a living, I have
this kind of bird’s eye view of aging and sickness, which,
actually, isn’t very comforting. Having spent countless
hours in nursing homes and hospitals and working with
clients as they see their loved ones through their declining
days, I’ve come to realize the body is a very mechanical and
predictable machine. Like a car or any other machine, it
rolls along without incident month after month, year after
year, accepting whatever maintenance it gets, all the while
continuing to do its job.
At some point, suddenly, the weakest link gives way and the
machine breaks down. At least it appears outwardly to happen
suddenly. But really, it wasn’t sudden at all. That weak
link has actually been degenerating slowly, although
undetected, often for many years. The organs of the body
seem to be willing to take a lot of insults. They take them
and keep on ticking. Even though they are taking the insults
without making much commotion, the insults are leaving
scars. These scars aren’t visible from the outside, and,
amazingly, the body continues to function as usual. But
behind the scenes the scars are adding up, and as they add
up, they are slowly weakening that organ. Then one day, the
weak link “suddenly” breaks. You have a heart attack or a
stroke, or a cancer or emphysema or some other major event.
We get away with mistreating and poorly maintaining the body
for a certain length of time. We take for granted that it
will keep on keeping on. We’re lulled into a false sense of
security by the body’s generosity. Then, when something
breaks, we wonder why. Then we wonder why we didn’t pay
attention and take care of this machine when we had the
chance.
My mission in creating this website is to offer a new
perspective on health – a more empowered and responsible
perspective. My hope is that I can inspire you to re-think
some of the old habits that are not supporting your health
and create new ones aimed at maintaining your machine so all
its parts can last a lifetime.
